Why Use Acupuncture to Treat Infertility

Acupuncture Improves Blood Flow to the Reproductive Organs

With acupuncture, the ovaries receive greater amounts of nutrients and hormonal stimulation, which improves overall egg quality.

Moreover, by increasing the blood flow to the uterus, the uterus lining will absorb more hormones and nutrients necessary to help it grow thicker and healthier, thus increasing the chances for implantation and carrying to term.

Acupuncture Increases the Production of Endorphins and Serotonin, the Body's Natural "Feel Good" Brain Chemicals. These Neurotransmitters Play a Role in

  • Regulating Menstruation
  • Increasing Sex Drive and Function
  • Maintaining Mood Balance
  • Warding off Anxiety/Stress/Depression
  • Regulating Bowel Movements
  • Improving Sleep
  • Reducing Pain
  • Enhancing Immune Function

Acupuncture Often Leads to a Great Improvement in Egg and Lining Quality and Significantly Reduces the Side Effects of Fertility Medications, such as Headaches, Mood Swings, Insomnia, Abdominal Pain and Constipation.

Jing, who was born and raised in Beijing, China, graduated from Capital Medical University in 1987 with an M.D. degree. Jing worked as a physician, a neurologist at Beijing Children's Hospital from 1987 to 1998.

Jing moved to the United States in 1998 and graduated from the American International Acupuncture Institute with an acupuncture diploma in 2001. She currently holds acupuncture licenses in both Connecticut and New York.

Jing established a private practice in Stamford, Connecticut in August 2016. For 10 years prior to that, she worked at RMACT (Reproductive Medicine Associates of CT) where she used acupuncture to support infertility doctors whose patients were undergoing IVF, IUI, or trying to conceive naturally. By helping patients achieve better blood circulation to the uterus, ovaries, and pelvic area, Jing's acupuncture treatments significantly increased embryo implantation rates after IVF or IUI procedures. She also helped with some of the toughest infertility cases, including many patients who had Low Ovarian Reserve or Poor Uterus Lining, successfully conceive.

Jing is a master acupuncturist. With 29 years of training and experience in both Western and Chinese medicine, she has developed unique and effective practices with significant success rates. Jing creates individualized acupuncture treatment plans for every patient. Many people can tell the difference even after the first treatment.

to When

When Should You Start Acupuncture Treatment

Patients generally benefit from more treatments rather than less. It is recommended to begin acupuncture three to four months before progressing to IUI or IVF. Most experts say you need about two treatments a week, sometimes for several months before the effects can be seen. Fertility acupuncture treatments are typically done:

During IVF Stimulation
When a patient starts injectable medications ( Menopur, Gonal-F, Follistim...), we recommend acupuncture twice a week until the retrieval. By improving blood circulation, your ovaries will receive more hormonal stimulation and more nutrients, so you produce better-quality eggs.

The Day of IVF Transfer

Studies shows acupuncture treatments pre- and post- IVF transfer increase success rates by 10% to 22%.

4 Weeks Before FET

For patients undergoing FET, hormonal medications start(not natural cycle FET) about 4 weeks before the transfer. We recommend that acupuncture treatments begin 4 weeks before the transfer as well. Acupuncture will relieve mental stress and increase the blood flow to the uterus, which helps the uterus lining grow thicker and healthier, and increase the chances for implantation.

Day Before or Day of Ovulation and 5-6 Days After Ovulation for Naturally Conceive

Sperm can live in your reproductive track for up to 3 - 5 days. But an egg can only live for about 12 to 24 hours after ovulation. If you plan conceive naturally, have sex 3 days prior and leading up to ovulation. An acupuncture treatment the day before or the day of ovulation will decrease stress and promote healthy ovulation to help with conception. Because the implantation occurs 6 to 12 days after ovulation/fertilization, another acupuncture treatment about 5 to 6 days after ovulation is also recommended to increase the chances of successful  implantation.

Day of and 5-6 Days after IUI

Acupuncture is recommended the day of IUI for a better chance of conception as well as 5 to 6 days after IUI for successful implantation.

3-4 Months Before Fertility Treatment for the Following Issues

  • High FSH and / or Low AMH
  • Poor Egg Quality
  • Poor Uterus Condition / Thin Uterus Lining
  • PCOS
  • Luteal Phase Defect
  • Amenorrhea

I am so happy to write this recommendation for Jing Zhang. I struggled with infertility for years before deciding to do IVF. I was introduced to Jing through my fertility clinic, and we started sessions right away.. Thanks in part to Jing, my IVF egg retrieval and frozen cycles were successful! I have a two year old daughter and I am expecting another baby in February. Jing is warm, caring, and professional, and I wouldn't hesitate to go back and see her if we decide to expand our family. IVF is an emotional time, and Jing encouraged me to stay positive while also addressing my concerns. I couldn't have managed this infertility journey without Jing on my team!
